Horticulture Degree

A Horticulture Degree is a degree that is four years or more that introduces and explores concepts of learning the science associated with developing vegetable, fruit, decorative and flower plants. It is also considered an art form by many people. Horticulture also studies seeds and seedlings. 

What Is Entailed in a Horticulture Degree?

Finding a balance is a main part of understanding Horticulture. A person learns the effects that a balance of soil, light, air, water and more has on plant life. This is a degree that is hands on as well as book intensive. Each plant has a different way of responding to the elements and understanding what conditions each plant thrives under is a big feat. 

An undergraduate will be able to understand the following information after they complete their degree:

· Plant propagation: This is plant biology and aspects relating to it. 
· Soil: The science of soil is seen in examining each addition such as fertilizers, the capacity it has to retain moisture and well as drainage aspects. 
· Morphology: This is the process a plant follows when it is first germinated until it is mature and starts the process again. Students study plant development, structure and form. 
· Nutrition of Plants: This includes aspects that deal with fertilization, macronutrients, micronutrients as well as toxic elements. 
· Plant Health: Deals with management of plants and maintaining their health for the long term, studying insects and their effect on plants (entomology), and looking at microbiology. 

A graduate degree (four year degree), will delve into the specifics and more advanced concepts of horticulture. 

· Seed Physiology: This is taking the plants to a molecular level. Exploration of the physiological process in a seed would include germination process, development and dormancy. 
· Plant Breeding: This is the process where the study of a plant can help yield crops at an increased rate. 
· Genetic: This study includes advanced features such as haploidy, somatic instability as well as protoplast fusion and tissue culture. 

What Career Is Available for a Horticulture Degree?

A Horticulture Degree can lead a person down many different paths. The most common path is a plant nursery owner. The next is a landscaping job. Both of these careers are usually entrepreneurships. There are many opportunities to become a part of a golf course by developing the design and lands keeping aspects.
