Writing a Letter to Santa: Children Reveal Their Wishes to Santa and Parents
The tradition of writing a letter to Santa probably just started as a simple way for parents to find out what children wanted without dispelling the myth of Santa Clause at a premature developmental point. It soon became as much a part of the Christmas holiday as well--milk and cookies!
Smart parents find a way to save these childhood treasures for future generations. One way to do so would be to use a home computer scanner and printer to make a copy to send out. Keep the original in a home archival storage system that is used for old documents and photos. One childhood is only good for a few genuinely sincere attempts to write a letter to Santa so each one is precious.
In addition to the obvious joy that these bring to parents and family members the letters are a great way for children to practice valuable correspondence skills. These are the result of highly motivated wishes and are often the child's best effort. Try to encourage the same level of sincerity after Christmas when Thank You notes need to be sent. A little less enthusiasm for those writing projects is natural so be patient. Purchased cards that only need a signature are fine for more resistant children.
Many grade school teachers have used the letter to Santa project for handwriting practice in the past but this tradition is falling by the wayside. It is especially important for children to enjoy this tradition at home when this hallmark of writing progress is not practiced at school.
A home project could incorporate the use of seasonal stationary and be scanned for printed distribution to family members who help Santa out. Try to resist the urge to simply use a computer font for this project though.
